French President Emmanuel Macron has ruled out the possibility of Ukraine joining the European Union now, stressing that this could take decades.
"A few years will not be enough for countries like Ukraine to fulfill the conditions for joining the European Union due to the criteria required by our organization... But we can give them a quick procedure such as granting candidate status, which we are doing now," TASS news agency quoted Macron as saying yesterday in Berlin.
Macron indicated that allowing Kiev to become a member may cause disappointment among the European Union's neighbors who adhere to its values and standards, and therefore it is necessary to create a new political organization that would bring these countries closer to Europe and ensure political and security coordination.
