One of the most iconic paintings by artist Andy Warhol has become the most expensive work of art of the 20th century sold at auction.
The 40-square-foot (258 sq.m.) "Shot Sage Blue Marilyn" - one of a dozen paintings by actress Marilyn Monroe painted by Warhol in the 1960s - sold last night (yesterday) for a record $ 195 million at Christie's Auction House In New York.
Prior to the sale, Christie's described the painting as “one of the rarest and most sublime paintings in the universe.” According to a CNN report,
Monroe's portrait - originally a stills photograph from the 1953 film "Niagara" - is one of the American artist's best-known works, alongside Campbell's soup cans, he began painting in 1962, shortly after Monroe's death.

Very few paintings have been sold at private sales for more than $ 200 million (including paintings by Jackson Pollock Willem de Kooning).
At auction, Leonardo da Vinci's work, "Salvator Mundi," sold for more than $ 450 million in 2017.
The previous record was set for Pablo Picasso's painting "Les Femmes d'Alger (Version O)", which sold at auction for $ 179.4 million in 2015.
"Silver Car Crash (Double Disaster)" - another work by Warhol - won more than $ 150 million at auction about a decade ago.
Other Monroe paintings by the artist were also sold at high prices, for example "White Marilyn" sold for $ 41 million in 2014.
"Shot Sage Blue Marilyn" belonged to a line of famous galleries and collectors before being acquired by Swiss art dealer Thomas Aman.
The portrait was put up for auction by the Doris Aman Zurik Foundation, a charity founded in the name of the merchant and his sister Doris.
Proceeds from the sale will fund health and education programs for children around the world, according to a press release.
