Washington (CNN) --

Tesla recalled 129,960 vehicles this month to fix infotainment systems that can overheat before and during fast charging.

Tesla says it is fixing the flaw with an over-the-air software update — like an app update on a smartphone — which makes recall less of a hassle for Tesla and affected owners.

Tesla owners will not need to take their vehicles to a service station.

Tesla has issued seven removals this year for the 2022 Model 3 and six for the 2022 Model Y, both of which have been addressed with over-the-air software updates.

Cars, especially electric vehicles, are increasingly relying on computers to run, so software fixes are likely to become more common.

Repairs can also be much less expensive compared to purchasing and installing physical parts like new airbags or engine components.

The recall issued this month includes 2022 Tesla Model 3 and Model Y models, as well as 2021 and 2022 Model S and Model X running certain versions of Tesla's operating system.

A computer chip in the infotainment system of these Teslas may not be cool enough, leading to slow processing or a reboot.

The infotainment system may lag or appear blank.

Tesla owners rely on the infotainment system for many functions, including navigation, music, heating and air conditioning, windshield wiper speed adjustment and rear view camera display.

Tesla said in a public filing to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTS) that it had identified 59 warranty claims in reports of the problem.

It initially fixed the problem in some vehicles this January by replacing the computer chip in the affected infotainment systems.

By April, it had developed a software update to address the problem.

Tesla said it is not aware of any accidents, injuries or deaths related to this condition.

A single traditional recall, in which affected owners must bring the vehicle in for repair, could financially cripple an automaker, which has to pay for labor and parts to complete repairs.

General Motors spent $4.1 billion on recalls in 2015 for issues like faulty ignition switches.

Recall completion rates are much higher for software updates than traditional patches, which is a security benefit.

Experts say one downside of over-the-air updates is that they can encourage automakers to release features that haven't been properly tested.

Tesla did not respond to a request for comment.
