Today (10th) Jao Tsung-I Academy and Lingnan University jointly held a seminar. Project operators in different periods pointed out that it is a big problem for them to achieve financial balance when operating and revitalizing historical buildings.


The theme of the seminar jointly organized by Jao Tsung-I Academy and Lingnan University is "Revitalization of Historic Buildings: Opportunities and Challenges".

The Revitalising Historic Buildings Partnership Scheme has had 19 non-profit-making organisations operating and revitalising relevant historic buildings, including Lui Sang Chun (School of Chinese Medicine, Hong Kong Baptist University), the former Lai Chi Kok Hospital (Jao Tsung-I Cultural Centre), the North Kowloon Magistrates' Court, the old Tai O Police Station (Tai O Heritage Hotel), Fong Yuen Study Room, Mei Ho House (Mei Ho House Youth Hostel and Mei Ho House Living Centre), Old Tai Po Police Station (Greenway Academy), Blue House Complex (We Hua Blue House) ), the former Fanling Magistrates’ Court (Hong Kong Youth Association Leadership Academy), Wang Uk Village House, Ho Jia Yuan Stone House (Stone House Home), King Yin Lane, Haw Par Villa (Ha Par Lok Pu), Brisbane Street Market (Hong Kong News-Expo), 12 Shuguan Street (Tai Hang Fire Dragon Cultural Center), the dormitory for senior staff of the old dairy company (Bo Fu Lam Ranch), the main building and bungalow of Madame Ho Tung Medical Bureau (Mrs Ho Tung Medical Bureau. The results showed that more than half of the institutions participated in the Revitalization of Historic Buildings Partnership Scheme for the first time, and more than 80 percent were very worried about revitalization and operation. The main difficulties they faced included conservation and renovation. and financial factors, such as compliance with existing building regulations and financial management to achieve balance of payments.

Among them, more than 60% of the institutions revealed that they have not yet succeeded in becoming self-financing.

Jiang Zhihao, Commissioner of Heritage Conservation of the Development Bureau, pointed out that due to the geographical and size constraints of some historical buildings, the operator decided to suspend operations after negotiating with them and hand over the buildings to the government. The bureau understands their difficulties and will actively find new ones. The operator continues to operate.
