Since May, all bathers in Göttingen have been allowed to swim topless.

This is also being discussed in Stuttgart.

However, a survey by BW24 shows that there is no need for this.

Stuttgart - In Göttingen in Lower Saxony, not only men are allowed to swim shirtless in swimming pools, but also women - but only on weekends.

Mina Berger from the feminist alliance “Equal Breasts for All” pushed through.

Berger had been banned from the swimming pool because of topless bathing.

The background: Mina Berger sees herself neither as a woman nor as a man, is non-binary.

However, the institution concerned saw Berger as a woman - and until then it was forbidden for them to be shirtless in the swimming pool.

As a result, the case ended up before the city's athletic board.

Since May 1st, all bathers have been allowed to swim topless.

A change in the rules in swimming pools was also discussed throughout Germany.

Topless bathing is not desired by women in Stuttgart

BW24

asked around in downtown Stuttgart whether passers-by could imagine going topless in swimming pools.

However, the majority of the Stuttgart women surveyed would probably not use such an offer.

"On the one hand, it has something to do with tradition and on the other hand, for me it's the display of private parts," says a passer-by.

"One should be considerate of others who may not want to see it," explains another.

Nevertheless, there are certainly women in Stuttgart who can well imagine going shirtless for a swim in the region's pools.

“I would think it would be good if there were such an offer,” says one interviewee and points out: “You don’t want to see some men topless either.” An older passer-by adds: “There were times when things changed nobody bothered about it”, while another woman believes that everyone should be free to do what they think is right.

Swimming pools in Baden-Württemberg do not want to introduce a topless option

However, the citizens of the region do not have to fear the introduction of such a regulation anyway.

As the

SWR

reported, many swimming pools in the districts in Baden-Württemberg are following the debate, but are not planning to implement the topless option in the near future.

Only in Leuze in Stuttgart is there a regulation that allows nude swimming in the indoor pools from Wednesday to Saturday from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m.

Many swimming pools merely referred to the already existing offers for nude bathing in their sauna areas.

In the sauna areas in bathing establishments, it is usually normal to be textile-free - there are no complaints.

That's how the advocates in the topless debate see it too.

However, respondents who spoke out against topless bathing see a difference.

“Sauna areas often have age restrictions.

Children sometimes don't have access to it," is the reasoning.
