A former Alabama warden, Vicky White, died yesterday (Monday) after being arrested in Indiana with an inmate named Casey White with whom she escaped from a detention facility more than a week ago, according to a CNN report.

White was hospitalized with self-inflicted gunshot wounds after being arrested during a police chase in Evansville, Indiana, Marshals told CNN.

Her injuries were "very serious," said Sheriff Dave Wooding of Vanderburg County.

According to Sheriff Rick Singleton of Lauderdale County, Alabama, from which the two fled on April 29, police did not fire a single shot during the chase and arrest.

Before the chase, officers spotted Vicky White coming out of a hotel wearing a wig, said Marshal Matt Kylie.

Then, she and Casey got in the car and drove off.

Authorities continued to follow them until they launched a chase that ended when the marshals' mission team hit with his car in the Cadillac where the couple was traveling.

The Cadillac overturned, Kylie said.

Casey White was driving the car, according to the report.

Officers were able to get the prisoner out of the car, but Vicky White was trapped inside with gunshot wounds to the head, Kylie said.

Casey White, told police to help his "wife" who shot herself in the head, the sheriff said, adding that he did not shoot her.

Kylie said that to the best of his knowledge, the couple was not married.

The arrest put an end to an 11-day manhunt that made headlines across the United States.

Hundreds of tips reached police from all over the country, including one tip that eventually led them to the location of the fleeing couple.

The tip came Sunday night, Singleton said.

According to Wooding, the two have been in Evansville since May 3.

"It's hard to believe they've been here so many days, but we were lucky to come across them today," he said.

Singleton reported that 38-year-old Casey White has been returned to Alabama.

The prisoner is facing previous charges of murder.

Vicky White, 56, was charged with aiding and abetting first-degree escape and then fraud and identity theft.

"He will be imprisoned in his own cell. He will remain handcuffed in his hands and feet while in the cell, and if he wants to sue me for violating his rights, whatever. He will not come out of this prison again. I promise," Singleton said.

"This escape was well planned," he added.

"A lot of preparations have been made before that. They had a lot of resources and cash, they had cars and everything it took to be successful, which is why the last week and a half has been so challenging."

Earlier yesterday, the marshals posted photos of Casey White at a car wash in Evansville.

Vicky White was not photographed with him.

Investigators received a warning Sunday that a 2006 Ford F-150 was discovered at a car wash in Evansville, north of Williamsburg, Tennessee, where a 2007 Ford Edge car was driven.

The Marshals traveled to Indiana following the tip.

A $ 15,000 prize was offered for information leading to the capture of Casey and $ 10,000 for Wiki.

Vicky White, who was assistant director at the detention facility, took Casey White out of the facility on April 29, saying she takes him for a psychological evaluation in court, and then plans to go to the clinic because she is not feeling well.

According to Singleton, she used fictitious names, making it difficult to search for her.

"If she had used her name, it would have made it easier for us to find her," he said.

He added that from Vicky White's videos taken by security cameras it appears that she made extensive preparations for the escape.

Investigators found a video of her purchasing menswear at a department store.

"She seems to have planned the escape well down to the last detail," Singleton said.

Earlier, a video of her was posted on Quality Inn in Florence, where she stayed the night before the escape.

Vicky White and Casey White have known each other since 2020. Before disappearing Vicky announced her desire to retire and sell her home at a price significantly lower than the market price.

The sheriff's office announced on May 4 that White was no longer employed by him, and that April 29 was her last day on the job.

She never signed the departure documents.
