The trial of Roland Carreño, accused of "
criminal association, illicit trafficking in weapons of war, association to commit crimes and financing of terrorism
", has begun, said Joel García, one of his lawyers.
Venezuelan law provides that the crime of “
terrorist financing
” is punishable by 15 to 25 years in prison.
The trial will resume on May 17, García added.
Possible crimes against humanity
The defense of Roland Carreño, arrested in mid-October 2020, denounced the delay in the proceedings against this former television presenter.

The trial should have started a long time ago
,” the lawyer said.
After his arrest, the Supreme Court of Justice established that Roland Carreño had acted as a "
financial operator " in "
terrorist
" projects
targeting the government of socialist President Nicolás Maduro, whose legitimacy is questioned by Juan Guaidó and various countries, including the United States.

Carreño was arrested along with two other activists, Yeferson Sarcos and Elías Rodríguez, who were later released.
He is being held in El Helicoide, the headquarters of the Venezuelan intelligence services located in the capital, where most of the political prisoners are held.
His case was brought to light by a UN mission which denounced possible crimes against humanity by the Maduro regime.
