War in Ukraine: the shortage of pancakes threatens Brittany

Breton millers see this shortage as an opportunity to develop a local activity, and are calling on producers to sow buckwheat from June.


Will the Bretons soon be deprived of their traditional pancake-sausage?

As an unexpected consequence of the war in Ukraine, the drop in imports puts producers of buckwheat flour in the face of a risk of shortage.

Russia and Ukraine account for a third of world buckwheat exports, while another share comes from China.

“But the price of buckwheat from China has become exorbitant with the rise in transport costs,

specifies Jean Paulic, president and general manager of the Paulic flour mill, in Saint-Gérand in Morbihan.

While the countries of the East have stopped their exports because of the war in Ukraine.

Result: between 5,000 and 10,000 tonnes of buckwheat will be missing at the end of 2022 to meet national market demand.

"Today, the consumption of Breton pancakes has become widespread throughout France",

recalls the miller.

In 2021, of the 25,600 tonnes of buckwheat produced in France, 5,600 were harvested in the five departments...
