Ada Colau's party bets on a third term for the mayor

The bases of Barcelona en comú, the party led by Ada Colau, will vote this Saturday if the mayor can run for a third term.

The formation's code of ethics establishes that the elected officials will remain in the City Council for two terms, but opens the door to a third, after voting by the militancy.

And it is just what will be put to the vote, at the proposal of the party coordinator, in a plenary session convened for Saturday.

The clear commitment of the coordinator (the second executive level of the party) for the third term and the vote of the militancy is the necessary preliminary step if Colau decides to present himself again in May 2023, which in the formation is almost certain .

Ada Colau: "I do not rule out a third term"

The mayor revealed to this newspaper in an interview last October that she did not rule out running for a third term.

She later qualified her words, assuring that she had not decided.

But she did publicly set the month of May, when the elections are one year away, to announce her decision.

“Nobody, neither outside nor inside Barcelona in comú, ignores that its political qualities, its integrity and its strength make it a fundamental asset in the consolidation of the most ambitious transformation that Barcelona has experienced in recent years for the benefit of the people who live in the city”, exposes the party to its activists in view of the meeting on Saturday.

“That is why the coordinator proposes to the plenary that they deliberate on the possibility that Ada Colau can present herself to the primary process to head the list of elections next year and that, to do so, she approves the exceptionality of a third and last term. ”, adds the text.

Nobody in the party doubts that the militancy will vote in favor of the third term of the figure that leads it, just as when the time comes they would support him heading the list.

The documentation also urges to make known the rest of the councilors and to support the figure of the Vice President of the Government, Yolanda Díaz and her good understanding with the mayor.

One year less than two weeks before the elections, the electoral race has heated up in recent days.

Last week Elsa Artadi announced her withdrawal from politics;

and this Wednesday the former mayor Xavier Trias has been ruled out to run for mayor again.

Meanwhile, the rest of the parties are also preparing pre-election acts (this Friday Ciutadans) or are already campaigning (Valents).

It has also been known that in ERC the only candidate for primaries is Ernest Maragall.
