Günther announced exploratory talks for Tuesday next week.
He also left open the option of relaunching the coalition of the three parties that have ruled together in a Jamaica alliance in the north since 2017.
Before the exploratory talks, the Schleswig-Holstein party leadership apparently took the time to celebrate the victory extensively.
After last autumn's federal election, which was sobering for the CDU, and the party's poor result in the state elections in Saarland, the result for the party is a triumph.
It is hoped that the result will also provide momentum for the important state elections in populous North Rhine-Westphalia on Sunday (May 15).

A party caravan was not missing either.
With a patronizing rock star gesture, Günther finally threw his tie into the crowd from the DJ booth.
