Five people were shot in a Chicago neighborhood on Tuesday.

Two were left in critical condition and one person died, according to the Chicago Police Department.

At a news conference Tuesday, Chicago Police Cmdr. Don Jerome of the Ninth Ward said officers responded to reports of three people shot at 48th and Ada streets.

Upon arrival, they discovered that five people had been shot.

"Officers immediately attempted to carry out life-saving measures for those who were shot and were met by a hostile crowd," Jerome said.

“Community members and gang members from this crowd were actively fighting police as they tried to care for the victims.”

Jerome said the officers were not injured.

After analyzing private video taken from the scene, police discovered that a vehicle fled the scene and crashed several blocks away, according to Jerome.

Jerome said two weapons were recovered from the vehicle and a third weapon was recovered from the scene.

Police are currently searching for the occupants of that vehicle and no arrests have been made at this time.

“There is a historic gang conflict between two rival gangs here.

We do not believe that the community is being targeted, but rather that specific gang members are targeting each other in this historic conflict,” Jerome said.
