"

The current number of 1,100 soldiers has been increased by 300

" and brought to an authorized ceiling of 1,400, in particular to compensate for the departure of French forces, said Christiane Hoffmann during a regular press briefing.

She was speaking after a meeting of the Council of Ministers which endorsed the extension of the mandate until May 31, 2023. German MPs have yet to give the green light to this decision.

EUTM and Minusma missions

The German army was engaged in Mali until April through two missions: 328 soldiers are participating in the European Union Training Mission in Mali (EUTM), and around 1,100 in the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (Minusma).

But the European Union stopped in April the training of the army and the national guard.

This training mission will, however, resume elsewhere in the Sahel, "

with an emphasis on Niger

," said the spokesperson.

The future of the Minusma itself does not seem completely guaranteed either after the withdrawal of the French forces, recognized Christiane Hoffmann.

Several countries have undertaken to review their participation in Minusma.

Westerners denounce in particular the presence of mercenaries from the Russian group Wagner, who came to Mali at the call of the junta.

In Mali, where violence by jihadist groups and militias has killed thousands since 2012, the military seized power in two coups in August 2020 and then in May 2021.
