The Ilse Kubaschewski Foundation is organizing a symposium on “care for the elderly” for the first time.

Under the title "Live, love, let go" it is about dementia and palliative care.

The Foundation has been able to recruit two top-class speakers for this purpose.

Starnberg – This day is all about existential questions.

About how we want to be treated at the end of our journey.

And about how we can support, care for and look after other people in this situation.

"Live, love, let go" is the title of the Ilse Kubaschewski Foundation's first symposium "Care for the Elderly".

The focus is on the topics of dementia and palliative medicine.

The symposium will take place on Tuesday 28 June.

Yesterday, those responsible presented the background.

It was very fortunate to have received a single donation of 10,000 euros in 2019, explained the chairman of the board of directors, Dietrich von Buttlar.

However, the money should not flow into the general pot.

"Instead, we want to set an example with the symposium," said von Buttlar.

"You don't like to think about getting old.

But in the long run it makes no sense not to face this problem.

It is inevitably coming our way.”

Evening event with two top-class speakers in their field

For the evening event, the Foundation has won two top-class speakers in their field: on the one hand, the director of the clinic and polyclinic for palliative medicine in the clinic of the University of Munich, Campus Großhadern, Professor Claudia Bausewein - on the other hand, the director of the clinic and polyclinic for psychiatry and psychotherapy at the Technical University Munich at the Klinikum Rechts der Isar, Professor Hans Förstl.

They want to explain the topics with scientific approaches, but also in a way that laypeople can understand, said von Buttlar.

The topic of dementia in particular has long played a major role at the Ilse Kubaschewski Foundation.

It offers further training for specialists, relatives and interested parties, gives advice and organizes regular meetings for relatives and sick people.

32 citizens are involved in the group of helpers and take care of around 45 sick people, as Corinna Bürner, head of the foundation's "Care for the Elderly" department, explained.

"We very often experience that relatives reach their limits with 24-hour care at home," she said.

It is all the more important to exchange ideas with each other and to get relief for at least a few hours from the group of helpers.

"The big problem is that relatives are always faced with helpless situations," said Bürner.

How do you react when the relative asks the same questions every minute?

How to make sure he doesn't leave the house at night?

And how to make everyday life as good and compatible as possible for both of you?

Symposium takes place in the Beccult in Pöcking

Bürner used an example to describe how quickly the disease can progress.

A few months ago, the foundation set up a group for people with the onset of dementia.

The participants understood each other well and developed a good working relationship.

"An older woman from Starnberg felt very comfortable in the group." Suddenly she fell ill, came to a hospital and from there was taken directly to a nursing home.

It didn't take two weeks.

"It happened so quickly," said Bürner.

The foundation also deals with the topic of palliative medicine and offers, among other things, courses for specialists.

Anyone who is interested in the symposium, in which the Galli Prevention Theater is also taking part with the play "Have you already forgotten today?": Due to the ongoing renovation work, it will not take place in the Schlossberghalle, but in the Beccult in Pöcking and will start at 5 p.m.

After lectures, theater and a concluding discussion, a buffet will close the evening at around 8:20 p.m.

Participation is free, but the number of places is limited to 200.

Registrations are now possible by phone (0 81 51) 65 05 40 or by email to sekretariat@iks-stiftung.de.
