Russia has demanded that the Polish authorities formally apologize for the assault on Moscow's ambassador to Warsaw, Sergey Andreev, during a memorial ceremony marking the end of the Great Patriotic War.
Russia Today website quoted the Russian Foreign Ministry as saying in a statement today that it had summoned Poland's ambassador to Moscow, Krzysztof Krajewski, to protest the pelting of red paint by demonstrators, Andreev, his wife and diplomats accompanying him during a wreath-laying ceremony at the grave of Soviet soldiers in Warsaw.
The ministry described the incident as a "blatant attack" and a "grave violation" of the Vienna Convention on International Relations, stressing that the Polish authorities failed to implement one of their most important obligations under this agreement, which is to guarantee the immunity of Russian diplomats.
According to the statement, the Russian side assured the Warsaw ambassador that it is waiting for an official apology from Poland’s leadership for what happened and demands it to guarantee the security of the Russian ambassador and all employees of Russian institutions in Poland, noting that Moscow may decide to take measures against Poland against the background of this incident based on how Warsaw deals with Moscow’s demands .
