Hundreds of people - mostly Afghan exiles - were sheltered on Wednesday morning during a police operation. VS

Several hundred people who occupied the Square du Cheval Noir in Pantin were evacuated this Wednesday morning by the police.

More than three months ago, migrants mostly from Afghanistan and fleeing the Taliban had found refuge on this small plot after having already been, for some, evacuated from the Ourcq canal at the end of January.

Since then, they lived in tents, in a great promiscuity.

“I had asked the prefect some time ago to shelter them, but the operation was postponed twice, explains the mayor of Pantin Bertrand Kern (PS).

There were between 350 and 400 people living there.

As others have heard of this operation, they were around 500 this morning when the police intervened.

It went pretty well.

Among the refugees, there were "12 families representing 62 people", specifies the first city councilor, who had installed toilets, a water point and a container for waste on the camp.

This Wednesday afternoon, the prefecture had still not communicated on the places where they were sheltered.

"As usual, we don't know where they went exactly," says Philippe, a member of the Solidarité Migrants Wilson association, who attended the evacuation.

Some would have landed near Melun.

The mayor recalls that the sheltering of refugees is a competence of the State

Philippe confirms that the operation “went rather well”.

“People wanted to leave anyway,” he adds.

They couldn't take it anymore.

At the beginning of April, Solidarité Migrants Wilson had demonstrated in the streets of the city with several associations and the local collective Pantin Solidaire to demand "unconditional and equal reception of all exiled people".

“We welcome the activation of temporary protection by the European Union for Ukrainian exiles (…), they wrote in a press release.

It must be extended to anyone who has come to seek refuge in France.

The Pantin Solidaire collective, which has been strongly mobilized in recent months to support these vulnerable populations, sent a letter on Tuesday to the mayor of Pantin to ask him "to start a reflection for the creation of a permanent reception area transient”.

Bertrand Kern recalls that the sheltering of these refugees is a competence of the State.

“How could our municipality, which has 6,000 housing applicants waiting, take care of 500 people like that?

It would be impossible.
