Tunisian security sources announced that the coast guard recovered the bodies of three migrants whose boat sank off the country's coast and rescued about 250 others in a number of separate incidents.
Reuters quoted Lieutenant-Colonel Ali Al-Ayari as saying: The coast guard rescued 248 migrants who were among 10 illegal immigration trips, and also recovered the bodies of three Africans whose boat sank off the coast of Sfax.
According to figures from the Tunisian Forum for Economic and Social Rights, in the first nine months of 2021, the Tunisian coast guard intercepted about 19,500 migrants trying to cross the Mediterranean, and 1,300 migrants were lost, while about 52,000 migrants arrived on the Italian coast, according to the records of the High Commissioner for Refugees.
Italy is one of the main entry points into Europe for migrants from North Africa.
