Government agencies are working to provide support to livestock breeders in rural areas and enable them to return to their agricultural activities by providing incentives to secure alternatives to manufactured fodder by giving them guaranteed seeds for fodder crops that contribute to securing part of the needs of their flocks, which reduces labor costs and contributes to improving the production process .

The director of the Livestock Development Project in the Ministry of Agriculture, Eng. Muhammad Hassan Akko, told SANA that the total quantity of various forage seeds in the participatory forage seed handling box amounted to more than 77 tons distributed in 70 boxes in the governorates of Homs, 30 boxes, Tartous, Lattakia and Hama with 10 boxes each. Including and then Damascus countryside with 6 boxes and Al-Ghab with 4 boxes, indicating that the project will support the funds in Damascus, Hama and Al-Ghab countryside during the coming period with additional quantities of seeds to expand the support process and deliver it to the largest number of livestock breeders in light of the high prices of feed.

Regarding the mechanism of the funds’ work, Akko said: The work is done by distributing the forage seed to the subscribers of the fund before the planting season and according to the needs of each farmer. The following year, new beneficiaries will have to, and one of the conditions for obtaining fodder seeds is that the beneficiary is a livestock breeder. The amount granted is determined by the area of ​​land to be cultivated, with a preference for poor families.

For her part, Engineer Iman Mahmoud, Head of the Fodder Resources Development Department in the project, indicated that the forage seeds donated from the Fund include vetch, coleus and barley seeds, in addition to salinity-tolerant seeds such as sorghum, pearl millet and triticale wheat, pointing out that the cultivation process is generally successful and the difficulties are limited to a decline in productivity due to natural weather conditions. Like lack of rain and frost.

The total number of livestock breeders who benefited from the seed fund until the end of last year reached 2722.
