Towards annexation? Pro-Russian separatists in Kherson will seek to join Russia | Israel today

2022-05-11T16:24:52.491Z

Moscow's spokesmen in the southern city announced that they would give up a referendum on the establishment of a "People's Republic" • On the other hand, the Ukrainian army is preparing for a counterattack in the south of the country

The local government set up by the Russians in the Kherson region of southern Ukraine announced yesterday (Tuesday) that its representatives had decided not to hold a referendum in the region, and instead to contact the Russian presidency directly to ask Moscow to annex them to Russia.

It can be assumed that the application will only be a rubber stamp for the Kremlin to carry out the annexation, as happened in Luhansk and Donetsk, but the very fear of holding the referendum indicates that Russia's rule over the southern province is undermined.

"They know that most of the population here opposes them. They have violently suppressed the demonstrations that have taken place here, and simply fired firearms at civilians, but they know no one will come to their referendum," said Galina, a resident of Kherson city who is under Russian occupation.

"The situation here is horrible. The Russians have cut us off from the Ukrainian cellular network and they want to transfer us to rubles. In the meantime, there is a shortage of products and the Russian army has looted everything nearby," the resident said angrily.

In addition, Russia's desire to establish a separatist republic in the Kherson region may be cut short, due to a claim that has appeared in various places in the Ukrainian media, and was confirmed by a security source in Kiev for "Israel Today" that the Ukrainian army last week launched a counterattack in the Kherson region.

The Russian army, thinly spread across a long strip of front from north to southern Ukraine and engulfed in a shuffling attack in the Donbas region, may find itself repulsed by the largest city it has managed to occupy since the invasion of Ukraine began.

Yesterday, the Ukrainian army managed to liberate a key town in the Kharkiv region and advance a few kilometers from the Russian border.

Also, the force of the Ukrainian army blew up a bridge of boats that the Russians had placed on the Swarodontsk River in the Luhansk region and apparently managed to destroy a large Russian armored force.
