Hundreds of Palestinians in the West Bank and the besieged Gaza Strip participated today in vigils denouncing the assassination of Palestinian journalist Shireen Abu Akleh.
Wafa Agency stated that the participants in the two vigils called by the Journalists Syndicate and the Movement Office of Journalists in Tulkarm and Salfit raised the Palestinian flag and pictures of the martyr Abu Aqila and banners condemning the crime of the occupation against her, calling on the international community and human rights and human rights institutions in the world to protect Palestinian journalists and to prosecute the occupation and expose its practices against free speech.
The governor of Tulkarm, Issam Abu Bakr, stressed that the crime of the occupation by targeting the martyr journalist Abu Aqila and injuring journalist Ali Smoudi aims to silence the voice of the Palestinian press by conveying the truth about the daily violations and crimes of the occupation against the Palestinian people, who will continue their struggle against the occupier until it is defeated and the establishment of its independent state with Jerusalem as its capital.
In turn, Salfit Governor Abdullah Kamil confirmed that the crime of assassinating journalist Abu Aqila was clearly targeted by the occupation forces, which confirms the criminal mentality of the occupation.
For his part, a member of the General Secretariat of the Palestinian Journalists Syndicate, Theeb Emara, considered that the targeting of journalist Abu Aqila and journalists by her requires providing protection for journalists from the crimes of the occupation, which does not differentiate between journalists and others, pointing out that her assassination is a premeditated crime that requires a serious stance towards the heinous crimes of the occupation in every international forums.
In the context, the Journalists Syndicate in Gaza City confirmed during the sit-down organized in the city center that the crime of the occupation is complete, and it is a direct assassination of the journalist Abu Aqila while performing her journalistic mission and covering the storming of Jenin camp while she was wearing the press uniform and press insignia as stipulated by international covenants and human rights institutions.
The Syndicate called on the international community and human rights institutions to urgently hold the occupation officials who carried out this crime against Abu Aqila accountable.
