Is there a 365-euro ticket for everyone in Nuremberg?

Many are in favor, but the project will not be implemented for the time being.

A new citizens' initiative is already underway.

Nuremberg – Many would like a 365-euro ticket for the greater Nuremberg area.

In a statement from January 2022, the greater Nuremberg transport association (VGN) stated that such a ticket would not be available for the time being.

According to a statement, the ticket for the entire VGN area cannot be realized under the general conditions until January 1, 2023, as originally planned.

An “overall concept” that includes sufficient funding is needed.

The cheaper ticket can only be introduced if cities and counties compensate for the loss of income.

New citizens' initiative is running

Now another citizens' petition is running for the implementation of the 365-euro ticket for everyone in the greater Nuremberg area.

"It's a déjà vu," Kathrin Flach Gomez, the councilor for the left, was quoted as saying in a statement.

"In the summer of 2020 we had collected over 20,000 signatures and the city council decided to introduce the climate-friendly ticket." At the end of March 2022, a majority in the city council prevailed and decided to refrain from introducing the ticket.

The city leaders are aggressively questioning the original plan.

"There is a risk that this decision and with it the social and ecological turnaround in traffic will be overturned in the last few meters," says the homepage of the citizens' petition.

"We want to prevent that with this citizens' initiative." The ticket is expected to increase the use of public transport, and the quality of life in the city will also increase.

A 365-euro annual subscription in Nuremberg for everyone could still come

The new citizens' request could actually lead to the ticket being introduced after all, but then only for the city of Nuremberg.

The whole thing should be financed "on the one hand from the revenue generated from ticket sales and on the other hand from the city's budget," says the citizens' petition.

With an annual budget of over 2 billion euros, the city has sufficient funds for a 365-euro ticket.

When the city council decided to introduce the ticket, it was a 365-euro ticket for the entire metropolitan area.

They wanted to tackle the project together with the cities of Fürth, Erlangen, Schwabach and the districts of Fürth, Erlangen-Höchstadt, Nürnberger Land and Roth, so that the chances of receiving funding from the Free State increased.

It remains to be seen whether and how the ticket for Nuremberg will come.

But Kathrin Flach Gomez is optimistic: "The support for the 365-euro ticket in Nuremberg's parliament is so great that we will be successful with the second attempt at the citizens' initiative."

VGN is currently working intensively on the implementation of the 9-euro ticket from the 2022 relief package. You can read here when it will be available in Nuremberg and where you can buy it.
