Italian security sources announced the rescue of 108 illegal immigrants who were on a boat in the Mediterranean and transferred to the Sicilian island of Lampedusa.
The Italian Aki news agency quoted the sources as saying that the boat that the migrants were on was intercepted off the coast of the island by a patrol boat of the Malian police forces.
United Nations statistics indicate that thousands of people were killed while trying to cross the Mediterranean to reach Europe, with the increase in illegal immigration due to chaos and the spread of terrorism.
Italy is one of the main entry points into Europe for migrants from North Africa.
