Impacts, explosions and thick smoke: These recordings from Wednesday are intended to show the Azov steelworks in the besieged port city of Mariupol being shelled.

The situation of the trapped defenders seems hopeless.

Now the Ukrainian leadership has proposed an exchange to Russia: the release of the seriously wounded fighters from the plant in exchange for the surrender of Russian prisoners of war.

No agreement has yet been reached.

Russia has so far refused to allow the fighters to withdraw freely.

They should lay down their arms and go into captivity.

According to Ukrainian information, around 1,000 defenders are still on the factory premises, half of them are injured.

Russia speaks of 2,500 Ukrainian fighters and foreign mercenaries in the steelworks.

Wives of the trapped soldiers met with Pope Francis in Rome on Wednesday.

You have asked him to advocate for the evacuation of the fighters to a safe third country.

Only then would they lay down their arms.

Yuliya Fedosiuk, Azov fighter's wife:

»A story from the Azov Steelworks: My husband wrote to me two days ago and asked me to find an article about how to live without water as long as possible.

That's the situation there.

There is hardly any water that can even be used technically.

They have no food, no water, no medicine.

One or two wounded soldiers die every day.”

The rest of the almost completely destroyed city is now in Russian hands.

The residents try to live an improvised everyday life.

Some have returned to their homes.

Sergei, resident of Mariupol:

»There was a shot directly into the window, a little above.

Everything is broken: the walls between the rooms, all the furniture.

Only an eight square meter children's room is left.

I came back from the shelter, opened the door, but there was no apartment there.

It was very spooky.

They shot so much it was just scary.«

President Volodymyr Zelenskyj presented himself hopeful in his latest video message.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine:

»Today I spoke to the German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

About defense aid for Ukraine, cooperation on energy and new sanctions against Russia.

Step by step we do everything to ensure that the aggressor himself is hit by his aggression.«

For the first time in history, his country has been awarded important international security guarantees, the President continued.

In this way, the post-war political neutrality of Ukraine demanded by Moscow could be secured.
