The use of deep geothermal energy and the expansion of photovoltaics in the urban area are the two most important elements in achieving the climate goals set by the federal government in Germering.

Germering – This is the quintessence of the climate use plan that has now been presented to the city council.

The Institute for Systemic Energy Consulting at the Landshut University of Applied Sciences was commissioned around two years ago to draw up the energy use plan.

During a first inventory last September, the head of the institute, Prof. Petra Denk, explained that the city primarily had a problem with the generation of thermal energy in private households.

82 percent use heat generated with fossil fuels.

The heat

Institute employee Katharina Zeiser has now confirmed this in the final report.

In order to reduce CO2 emissions by 65 percent by 2030 compared to 1990, Germering must reduce emissions by a third.

Every Germeringer would have to save a tonne of CO2 per year - these figures do not even include the pollution caused by traffic.

(By the way: everything from the region is now also available in our regular FFB newsletter.)

According to Katharina Zeiser, reducing CO2 to zero causes the fewest problems when it comes to power generation.

This is feasible through the massive expansion of open space and roof photovoltaics.

Wind power should not be written off either, said the expert.

When asked by SPD spokesman Daniel Liebetruth whether it wouldn't take too long for wind turbines to be built, Zeiser replied: "No, that's feasible - because there is currently a compulsion to do so."

According to Katharina Zauser, the switch to CO2-neutral heat generation is becoming more difficult.

The most important measure here is the entry into deep geothermal energy.

If this is implemented, Germering could save 20 percent CO2.

It is therefore important that the works committee decided on a feasibility study in January.

According to Zeiser, another possibility for more sustainable heat generation would be the construction of a so-called low-temperature heating network - however, this is only recommended for the largest new building projects.

For the Kreuzlinger Feld, whatever the future development looks like, this would make sense.

With low-temperature heating networks, the water arrives at the houses at only 30 degrees and is then brought to the required temperature with the help of heat pumps.

Charging stations for e-cars

The expansion of the charging infrastructure for e-cars is also part of the energy use plan.

Here, too, the city faces a major task.

According to Zeiser, Germering will need around 400 public charging stations by 2030 to meet demand.

There are currently eight.

However, the construction of these charging stations is far from sufficient, added energy officer Christian Ganslmeier (CSU).

The reason: too little current flows through the laid cables.

He experienced this himself as chairman of the social foundation during the current construction of the hospice and women's shelter: the existing electricity in Untere Nahofstraße was not even sufficient for this.

New lines also had to be laid.

The city must therefore also invest heavily in network expansion.

The city councilors unanimously decided to take the energy use plan into account in the further development of the city.

The proposed measures should first be evaluated and an implementation plan drawn up promptly.
