A famous Paraguayan prosecutor, who is fighting against organized crime in his country, was shot to death during his honeymoon in Colombia.

Marcelo Pachi, 45, was spending time with his journalist wife on the beach on the Caribbean island of Barrow in the Caribbean south of Cartagena, when he was killed by two gunmen.

Hours before the shooting, Pechi's wife announced on Instagram that she was pregnant.

Paraguayan president Mario Abdo Benitez described the shooting as a "cowardly murder".

He pledged to step up state efforts in the fight against organized crime.

Pechi's wife, journalist Claudia Aguilera who was not injured in the shooting, said two men approached a couple staying at a private beach, before shooting her husband.

She said he had not previously received threats on his life.

"Two men attacked Marcello. One of them got out of the jet ski, and without a word shot Marcello twice, once in the face and once in the back. They arrived on a small ship, maybe on a jet ski, the truth is I did not see well," she told the El Tempo newspaper.

The last post Aguilera posted to Instagram before the shooting was a picture of her and her husband, and a pair of baby shoes, with the message: "The best wedding gift ... the new life that is a testament to the sweetest love of all."

Pechi at the time was in the midst of investigating several famous cases, including a shooting incident at a January concert in which a drug dealer was killed.

In 2020 he was working on a case against Brazilian footballer Ronaldino, who was arrested while trying to enter Paraguay with a forged passport.

He specialized in organized crime, drug trafficking, money laundering and terrorist financing.

According to Paraguayan prosecutor Augusto Salas, Pechi's colleague, the attack looks like "a typical mafia attack, so I think until proven otherwise," he told AFP.

The Colombian National Police Chief, General George Luis Vargas, said he was not at all aware that Pechi was staying in Colombia.

He said Pechi was one of the most secure people since "investigating the cases of international terrorism."

Paraguay is the largest producer of marijuana in South America, but growing the plant is still illegal in the country, meaning most of the crops are smuggled to Argentina and Brazil from Paraguay.

Colombian Secretary of State and Vice President Marta Lucia Ramirez said authorities were working to find out "the motives and culprits for the horrific murder."

A special team of forensic investigators has been sent to Cartagena, Colombian Defense Minister Diego Mulano said.

Officials from the United States and Paraguay are working with the team to help identify and prosecute the shooters, police said.

A $ 122,000 prize is offered to anyone who helps identify those involved in the shooting.
