Legislative 2022: Clément Beaune launches his campaign in Paris against Caroline Mécary

2022-05-12T20:20:00.374Z

The Secretary of State for European Affairs will face the lawyer Caroline Mécary invested by LFI, in a constituency quite marked on the left.

A game to follow.

While the terraces are crowded this Thursday evening in Paris, it was inside a bar in the 4th arrondissement that the first public campaign meeting of Clément Beaune took place, invested by the presidential majority for the legislative elections. .

Faced with an enthusiastic room of more than a hundred people, the Secretary of State for European Affairs immediately attacked the New People's Ecological and Social Union (Nupes), whose candidate Caroline Mécary, a lawyer and activist for rights of homosexual people.

The French did not choose Jean-Luc Mélenchon as spokesperson and as president

”, hammers the Renaissance candidate in the face of a quickly conquered audience.

He thus wishes to recall that

and that "

to say otherwise is not to respect democracy

".

Although this seat of deputy is currently held by LREM, the battle in the 7th district of Paris - which includes the 4th arrondissement of the capital as well as part of the 11th and 12th - is not yet won.

For 20 years, this constituency was won by the socialist Patrick Bloche.

He was dislodged in 2017 by Pacôme Rupin, himself from the PS, before joining En Marche, which won against the outgoing with 55.9% of the vote.

Pacôme Rupin explained in our columns that he did not want to run for a new mandate, by “

desire to take a step back and do something else

”.

The outgoing deputy also admits to no longer being "

in phase

" with certain majority projects, such as retirement at 65.

In addition, the 7th constituency of Paris, if it largely voted Emmanuel Macron in the second round, was more divided during the first.

The president obtained 36.42% of the vote, only 5 points more than Jean-Luc Mélenchon (31.29%).

During the presidential election, however, the left was not united behind a single candidate.

If we add the scores of the ecologist, socialist and communist contenders to that obtained by Jean-Luc Mélenchon, the left actually obtains 43.21% of the votes cast in the first round.

The games are therefore not yet made for Clément Beaune, although he himself is located rather to the left of the majority.

The bet is even risky, since it is the first time that he is presenting himself in an electoral ballot.

A possible candidacy in Paris in 2026

"

If you want to stay in politics, you have to rub shoulders with the election

", confides Clément Beaune between two sips of beer.

"

I want to be elected, to have a role that is both national and local, in Paris

", admits the one who "

did not want to run elsewhere

" and does not hesitate to criticize the management of the city of Paris by Anne Hidalgo.

The Minister does not rule out the fact of being himself "

tempted

" by the town hall of the capital.

Responding to a participant's question, Clément Beaune clarified that he was "

not running against Madame Hidalgo, at least not now

", triggering a round of applause.

"

An elected official, even if he is not a mayor, must put pressure on and defend a certain vision of his city

", and this is what he intends to do, counting on making a long-term commitment to the capital.

I will not let go of Paris

”, he specifies, even if he had to return to the government.

During this campaign, Clément Beaune wants to highlight three themes that are dear to him.

Europe, ecology and public services.

Faced with the alliance of left-wing parties, he intends to prove that "

the real Europeans, the real ecologists, that's us

".

For him, Europe "

deserves better than disobedience, than submission, than the overturning of the table

", advocated by the Insoumis.

According to this convinced European, former adviser to Emmanuel Macron on this subject, "

we cannot treat Europe in this way

".

Well aware of the risk he runs in standing for an election, the result and score of which will influence his future as Emmanuel Macron's minister and his Parisian and national ambitions, Clément Beaune recalls his attachment to Paris, where he was born and where he grew up.

The candidate also judges that this constituency is "

the sum of the social and political developments

" of the city of Paris.

It remains to be proven that, on June 12 and 19, this sum will be well above 50% of the votes.
