The trustees of the "612 Humanitarian Support Fund" were successively arrested by the police, including Xu Baoqiang, a former visiting associate professor of the Department of Cultural Studies of Lingnan University, Wu Aiyi, a former member of the legal profession, and Cardinal Chen Rijun, bishop emeritus of the Catholic Diocese of Hong Kong.

The trustees of the "612 Humanitarian Support Fund" were successively detained by the police, including Xu Baoqiang, a former visiting associate professor of the Department of Cultural Studies of Lingnan University, Wu Aiyi, a former lawmaker, Cardinal Emeritus Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Hong Kong, Cardinal Chen Rijun, and singer Ho Yunshi.

The 90-year-old Chen Rijun was arrested for the first time, and the Vatican is closely monitoring the development.

Guan Haoming, a member of the Legislative Council Election Committee and an Anglican pastor, believes that the incident does not involve religious freedom.

Lai Tung-kwok, a member of the election committee who is a Catholic and former Secretary of the Security Bureau, said that he has always respected Chen Rijun: "We have the same belief. As for this matter involving a criminal case, this matter should not have anything to do with religious beliefs."

Di Zhiyuan, a member of the social welfare sector, pointed out that he understands that the "Hong Kong National Security Law" needs to be implemented, and there is no similar precedent for the case, but he believes that the police must explain more about the details of the case.

He also pointed out that it is a good thing for the people involved to be released on bail, because they have a certain degree of credibility in the society, the chances of absconding are low, and bail is fairer to them.

Affect Sino-Vatican relations?

Guan Haoming: I am not qualified to comment

Guan Haoming said that since the incident involved judicial procedures, the police did not explain the case in detail and would not comment in detail; but he has personally known Chen Rijun for many years, and the other party is not a bad-hearted person: "I will continue to pray for him."

When asked if Chen Rijun's arrest would affect the outside world's perception of religious freedom in Hong Kong, Guan Haoming believed that "the incident has nothing to do with religious freedom, but is related to the use of funds."

As for whether it will affect Sino-Vatican relations, Guan Haoming said he is not qualified to comment.
