Last Tuesday marked the 89th anniversary of the burning of "un-German" literary works by the Nazis on May 10, 1933.

To commemorate the destruction of these works, committed Miesbachers read publicly from the burned books in various places in the city on Tuesday.

Miesbach - Mayor Gerhard Braunmiller (CSU), for example, read Erich Kästner's "When I was a little boy" in front of the town hall. The Protestant pastor Erwin Sergel read poems by Kurt Tucholsky in front of the Apostle Church, city councilor Inge Jooß read "Gilgi - one of us" at the fairy tale fountain. by Irmgard Keun.

However, only a few people from Miesbach stayed seated to listen to the readers: "The response was not as great as expected," says Inge Jooß (SPD).

What was it?

"We made a planning mistake." The timing of the readings in the morning and afternoon was unfavorable for working people.

"Most people simply don't have the time," says Jooß.

Many passers-by were interested, but could not linger.

Nevertheless, there were five to eight listeners at some stations.

Jooß is certain that there will be another memorial event next year.

"We'll definitely do something, we'll just do it differently." Because the topic is too important to be forgotten.

"Even today, freedom of expression is restricted in some places, critical voices are banned."
