The Dorfen water rescue service is giving swimming courses again.

After the corona pandemic, there is a large backlog in Dorfen.

The rescuers are still looking for volunteers.

Dorfen

– summer, sun, safe swimming – the bathing season is beginning, and with that the Dorfen Lifeguard Service is at the start.

The team keeps watch at the edge of the pool in Dorfen and gives swimming courses.

Over 100 children are on the waiting list.

"The pandemic", Armin Maier explains this high demand.

Because in the past few years, the volunteers have not been able to offer swimming courses.

An enormous backlog has now formed, according to the secretary of the Dorfen local group.

"At the age of six, from the time they start school, the children should also learn to swim," says Maier.

After all, a child can quickly fall into the water or break through the ice: "Then it's in mortal danger."

Actually, everyone should be able to swim, agrees Felix Huber.

According to the German Life Saving Society (DLRG), the number of non-swimmers had already increased steadily before the pandemic, and Corona had made the situation even worse.

One of the reasons: not enough swimming instructors and not enough pools.

Parents are also often not behind the children learning to swim, they do not correctly assess the risk potential.

The villagers are doing really well there.

The lifeguard team is highly motivated and qualified.

"We used the time of the pandemic for a lot of training," explains Huber, who is responsible for technical management in the association.

Because: "We can't be present everywhere." If there is a need, the people of Dorfen still support the other local groups in the district, for example at Finsinger, Kronthaler or Wörther Weiher.

The main goal is to work preventively.

The water rescue service also gives swimming lessons at the elementary schools in Dorfen.

Normally, according to Huber, the little ones would earn the seahorse badge.

"That's enough to keep them afloat."

The swimming course is not enough to gain security.

"It's up to the parents.

They have to practice with the children and not just go to the fun pool.” After all, swimming is a sport for all ages: “From six to 80 years of age – good for the heart and circulation, for the back muscles, and it’s easy on the joints,” explains Hüseyin Aslan , who has been chairman of the Dorfen water rescue service for a year.

Most children love the water, some have to get used to it.

Aslan reports on a boy who didn't want to go into cold water a few days ago.

"I spoke to the mother, then to the boy - and suddenly he had enough courage and got into the pool."

So far, no one has drowned in Dorfen's outdoor pool, he reports.

But there were plenty of injuries: bruised knees, heat collapse, bee stings - and the rescuers had to pull one or two swimmers out of the water just before he dived.

Twelve helpers are currently volunteering at the outdoor pool, they have completed first-aid courses.

"It would be nice if there were more," the crew asked for support.

We are particularly looking for pensioners or young people over 18 who have time during the day.

"I would like to thank you for the decades-long partnership and look forward to further cooperation," explained Mayor Heinz Grundner at the annual general meeting.

The Dorfen water rescue service provides important support in ensuring safety.

"And I am very pleased that swimming courses are being offered again in the outdoor pool."

On top of that, there was a check for 1,000 euros from the VR-Bank Taufkirchen-Dorfen: "For our commitment - be it with the supervision of the outdoor pool or with the swimming courses.

In any case, we are looking forward to the new bathing season,” says Maier.

It is particularly nice when children say after the courses: "Look how well I can swim."
