MTR's imperial urban line modern trains (commonly known as M-trains), which were originally planned to be retired in 2027, are expected to be decommissioned later?

MTR has recently issued tender documents, planning to install CCTV and passenger status display system for 79 existing inch trains currently serving the Island Line and Tsuen Wan Line. The tender requires the successful bidder to complete the project in the third quarter of 2024.

If the project is completed on schedule, that is, after the installation of related systems, the original decommissioning time is only 2.5 years.

The MTR replied that after the arson incident at Tsim Sha Tsui Station in 2017, it reviewed the incident handling and emergency response measures, including installing CCTVs in all MTR heavy rail carriages by the end of 2023.

MTR did not respond to whether the batch of imperial trains would be delayed in retirement.

According to the tender documents issued by the MTR, the MTR intends to install a remote closed-circuit television system in the carriages and a display system for the passenger status of the carriages for the existing 79 inch trains on the Hong Kong Island Line and the Tsuen Wan Line.

The document states that the closed-circuit television system must have a recording function, and the vehicle control center can also download images remotely.

The tender documents require that the related works need to be installed in the third quarter of 2024.

Originally planned to introduce new cars made in China to replace imperial trains

The MTR purchased these imperial trains from 1979 to 1985. From 1998 to 1999, the trains were refurbished by an Australian company, and since then they have been called MTR urban line modern trains.

In 2015, MTR purchased 93 8-car trains (commonly known as Q-trains) from CSR Qingdao Sifang Rolling Stock Co., Ltd. to replace trains on several railway lines, including the inch trains on the Tsuen Wan Line and the Hong Kong Island Line.

At the same time as changing trains, the MTR also spent 3.3 billion yuan to upgrade the signalling system, hoping to increase the frequency by introducing new cars and a new signalling system.

However, during the testing of the new signalling system in March 2019, two trains collided between Central and Admiralty Station, and the replacement of the signalling system has been delayed since then.

MTR revealed in its results announcement earlier that although the replacement of signalling hardware along the tracks of the new signalling system project is progressing smoothly, it is expected to take longer than expected to complete due to complex technical matters and the relationship between the epidemic.

The mainland-made Q-train must be replaced with the old signal system. The first new car is expected to be put into service this year.

The MTR also stated at the time that it had decided to install the above-mentioned Chinese-made trains in phases, equipped with the existing old signalling system "SACEM system", and the first new trains are expected to be put into service in 2022.

In addition, the MTR admits that it is exploring alternatives, including the feasibility of only upgrading the existing system for long-term use, which means there is an opportunity to abandon the new system.

MTR: In response to the 2017 Tsim Sha Tsui Station arson incident, CCTVs must be installed in all heavy rail carriages

The MTR replied that it has recently invited interested contractors to submit letters of intent for the installation of remote CCTV systems in trains on the 79 Hong Kong Island Line and Tsuen Wan Lines in the urban trains.

The MTR continued to point out that after the arson incident at Tsim Sha Tsui Station in 2017, it comprehensively reviewed the incident handling and emergency response measures, and put forward a number of recommendations. Install CCTV in the car.
