Ruhr Bishop Franz-Josef Overbeck reacted with dismay to the allegedly planned attack by the 16-year-old student at the Catholic Don Bosco High School in Essen.
"The suspicion that a student wanted to carry out an attack there by force of arms scares me just as much as it does the students, teachers, parents, neighbors and everyone else who is affected," said Overbeck in a statement from the diocese of Essen.
Essen - He was "extremely grateful to the police for acting so quickly, carefully and decisively and thus possibly preventing a serious crime," added Overbeck.
Father Otto Nosbisch, director of the Salesian Don Boscos in Essen, explained: "The school community is shocked and dismayed by the obviously planned attack and the first police findings, the results of which we are still waiting for." Nosbisch warned against speculating about the background to participate: "We are happy and grateful that the information about the planned crime could prevent worse things from happening.
We would like to thank the school management, all those responsible and the officials of the investigating authorities for their careful and level-headed approach.”

Bishop Overbeck emphasized that the diocese would carefully coordinate all further steps together with the Salesians of Don Bosco, who are responsible for the grammar school co-financed by the diocese.
They want to “support the police in the investigation and help the school community to process the events as well as possible”.
