On the way to another front in Europe?
"Sweden and Finland will become our enemies."
This was stated tonight (Thursday) by Russia's Deputy Ambassador to the UN, referring to the intention of the two countries to join the NATO alliance.
"They know that if they become members of NATO it will lead to certain countermeasures on the part of Russia.
"If there is a deployment of NATO in these territories, they will become targets of attack," said Dmitry Polyansky.
Meanwhile, White House spokeswoman Jen Saki said at a press briefing "The US will support Finland's and Sweden's joining NATO if they so choose. I will emphasize that although they are not members of NATO our armies have worked together for many years."
Finland's president Sauli Ninista and local prime minister Sana Marin announced this morning that they intend to join the NATO alliance.
"Joining NATO will strengthen Finland's security," the two said in a statement to local media. "As a member of the organization, Finland will be able to strengthen its defense alliance.
"Finland must submit the application without delay, and we hope that the necessary steps for the country will be taken in the coming days."
The Kremlin reacted to the decision, saying "Finland has joined the unfriendly steps the EU has taken towards Russia - this is a case that will lead to remorse and a proportionate response. Everyone wants to avoid a direct confrontation between NATO and Russia, but Finland's joining the organization is a 'clear threat' to us."
The Kremlin further said that Russia "is ready to give the appropriate response to any party that tries to intervene in Ukraine. NATO's response will not make the world or Europe a more stable place."
