An international team of astronomers today (Thursday) unveiled the first image of the "delicate giant", a black hole lurking in the center of the Milky Way galaxy.

The black hole, called Sagittarius A, or Sgr A - is just the second hole ever caught in the picture.

The achievement was achieved by the same "Event Horizon Telescope" (EHT) - which in 2019 revealed the first ever image of a black hole, but in the heart of a different galaxy.

The supermassive #BlackHole at the center of our Milky Way Galaxy, Sagittarius A *, has been imaged by the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT).

Chandra and many other telescopes observed Sagittarius A * simultaneously.

Astronomer Priel Azal of the University of Arizona at a news conference in Washington called the achievement "the first direct image of the delicate giant at the center of our galaxy," showing a glowing ring of red, yellow and white surrounding a darker center.

The mass of the black hole is 4 million times that of the sun, and is located 26,000 light-years from Earth.

Black holes are extremely dense objects with such a strong gravitational pull that even light cannot escape them - making viewing them particularly challenging.

The entrance to a black hole is the point of no return beyond which everything is sucked to doom - stars, planets, gas, dust and all forms of electromagnetic radiation.
