Astronomers around the world revealed this Thursday the first image of the supermassive black hole in the center of the Milky Way, our galaxy, according to the European Southern Observatory (ESO, for its acronym in English) in a statement from press.

According to the scientists, this image "provides overwhelming evidence that the object is indeed a black hole and sheds valuable clues as to its workings."

The image was captured by the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT), a formation that joined eight existing radio observatories around the planet to form a single virtual telescope "the size of the Earth", explained the ESO.

"The telescope is named after the event horizon, the edge of the black hole beyond which no light can escape," the observatory added.
