Another U-turn at Josefs Nahkauf Box in Pettstadt.

The Mini-Rewe in the Bavarian community is now allowed to open on Sundays and public holidays.

Pettstadt – The Mini-Rewe in Pettstadt, Bavaria, which opened in March 2022, is just 39 square meters in size.

But despite the rather small size, "Josefs Nahkauf Box", as the mini branch is called, has been making waves for weeks.

The reason: Although it was originally announced that the "Walk-in Store" would be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, Mini-Rewe soon had to close on Sundays and public holidays.

Now the renewed turn in the cause "Josef's Nahkauf Box".

Suddenly the Mini-Rewe really is open around the clock, reports 24RHEIN.

Mini-Rewe in Pettstadt: Zoff about opening times at Josefs Nahkauf Box

With "Josefs Nahkauf Box", Rewe and its subsidiary Nahkauf are currently testing a concept for mini branches without staff.

These should primarily improve the local supply in rural areas.

Where people previously had to drive several kilometers to the nearest supermarket, automated branches could make it possible for everyone to get the essentials locally.

This is also the idea of Rewe in Pettstadt.

Everyone should be able to shop around the clock in Josefs Nahkauf Box.

However, Rewe had apparently made this plan without the government of Upper Franconia.

Due to a decision by the Bavarian Ministry of Labor in July 2021, Mini-Rewe had to break its “around the clock” promise again shortly after opening.

The reason: "Digital mini-supermarkets without sales staff" in Bavaria may only be open around the clock on weekdays, i.e. from Monday to Saturday.

On Sundays and public holidays they have to close again.

Josefs Nahkauf Box: This is how the Mini-Rewe works in Pettstadt

Josefs Nahkauf Box in Ohmstraße in Pettstadt is a new test project of the supermarket chain Rewe from Cologne.

With such mini branches, Rewe wants to improve the local supply in rural areas throughout Germany in the future.

The branch in Pettstadt is only 39 square meters in size and has around 700 items in its range.

The shop works without staff, the customers check out themselves at a self-checkout counter.

An EC or credit card is also required to use Josefs Nahkauf Box.

You don't need this at the checkout, you need it to get access.

Josefs Nahkauf Box: Mini-Rewe in Pettstadt is allowed to open around the clock

This caused criticism, including from the FDP in Bavaria, which even called for an adjustment to the public holiday law in the state parliament.

But now the new U-turn: Because although the law in Bavaria remains unchanged, there is an exemption for the Mini-Rewe in Pettstadt.

Because in individual cases the law can be circumvented if the "protection goals of the public holiday law" are not violated (according to Art. 5 FTG).

"The municipal council came to the conclusion that the protection goals of the public holiday law - rest from work, Sundays and public holidays, freedom of religion - are not affected by the operation of the digital micro-supermarket (close-up shopping box) in the commercial area of Pettstadt," say the municipality of Pettstadt and its mayor Jochen hack with.

This means that the Mini-Rewe on Ohmstraße can now open again on Sundays.

This decision is now initially in a pilot phase.

This also makes things easier for the Rewe subsidiary Nahkauf.

According to Florian Sörensen, national sales manager at Nahkauf, the decision is even vital for the mini-branch.

"Permanent closure on Sundays and public holidays would have led to the economic failure of the project," says Sörensen.
