Starnberg - From Monday, May 16, the doorbell will ring: the surveys for the census in the district of Starnberg will begin.

What the interviewers want to know about the survey and how long it lasts.

Exactly how many residents does the district of Starnberg have?

How do people live here?

What's your schoool degree?

Which profession?

All of these questions should be clarified as part of the census, which takes place every ten years and is made up for this year with a one-year delay due to the corona virus.

Around 4,800 randomly selected addresses will be surveyed in the period up to around mid-August.

In this context, the census survey agency also warns against fraudulent free riders.

Around 150 survey officers will be on duty in the Starnberg district until mid-August

The first affected citizens have already been informed in writing.

Around 150 so-called survey officers will be on duty from May 16 to around mid-August to carry out the surveys, according to the Starnberg district office.

The volunteers have been trained in advance and can earn some extra tax-free money.

“The visit of the interviewers will be announced in writing.

They also have an official ID with them, which they present at the appointment.

Please be sure to have your ID shown to you,” is the appeal from Markus Reichart from the local census collection agency.

Answer directly or fill out a questionnaire

The survey is about age, marital status and household size.

It usually takes five to ten minutes per household.

About half of the households are also asked questions from an extended questionnaire.

Among other things, this includes school qualifications or a job.

This survey takes another ten to 15 minutes per household.

You can either answer these additional questions directly to the interviewer, fill out a paper questionnaire or answer later online.

The surveys take place at the house or apartment door.

The interviewers are not allowed to enter an apartment without the consent of the person to be interviewed.

The interviewers are also not allowed to ask about income, religion, bank information, identification documents, passwords, signatures or, for example, vaccination status.

If in doubt, you should break off the conversation and inform the police or the district office of Starnberg.

As part of the census, information is also obtained from all owners of apartments or buildings with living space, independently of the public survey.

This query is made exclusively in writing and comes by post directly from the Bavarian State Office for Statistics.

Participation in the census is mandatory by law.

District office warns of scammers

Experiences from the last census in 2011 showed that con artists also took advantage of the referendum.

At that time there were attempts to question citizens on the phone or even at the front door.

The scammers promised a small amount of money for participation and tried to get PIN numbers or bank details from citizens.

Such cases were known, for example, in the district of Erding.

A false questionnaire also appeared in Constance, which included questions about political views, financial circumstances and health.

Official interviewers do not come unannounced

That is why the census collection agency in the Starnberg district office warns again before this year's census against free riders who pretend to be survey officers.

"It is therefore important to know: the official interviewers never come unannounced, for data protection reasons they always come alone and can identify themselves," emphasizes Markus Reichart from the local census collection agency.

Each household selected for the survey receives a letter in advance with the announcement of the date and a telephone number of the survey officer.
