The Turkish regime's Supreme Court of Appeals today upheld a prison sentence against an official in the opposition Republican People's Party of Turkey.
Today, AFP reported that the Supreme Court of Appeal upheld the conviction of Canan Kaftancioglu, head of the Istanbul branch of the People's Party, on three charges, with a prison sentence of four years, 11 months and 20 days.
Most of the accusations relate to tweets Kaftancioglu published between 2012 and 2017, in which she criticized the policies of the Turkish regime.
"President of the Turkish regime, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, is escalating repression as he loses support on the ground amid mounting economic pressure in the country," said Sirin Silvin Korkmaz of the Istanbul Research Institute, commenting on the ruling.
"Kaftancioglu is a rising figure in the Republican People's Party and a frequent target of Erdogan's government as the ruling Justice and Development Party seeks revenge after losing Istanbul by sending it to prison," Korkmaz added.
In 2019, 50-year-old Jenan Kaftancioglu was sentenced to about ten years in prison. After the verdict was issued, she confirmed that she would not surrender and said, "They think they can scare us, but we will continue to raise our voice."
