The Minister of Water Resources, Dr. Tammam Raad, discussed today with Abdul Hakim Al-Waer, Assistant Director-General of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and Mike Robson, the resident representative of the organization, to enhance prospects for joint cooperation between the Organization and the Ministry.
During the meeting, the difficulties facing the water resources sector in Syria were reviewed, such as climatic changes, damage and sabotage to public irrigation facilities and projects, rehabilitation and equipping of water resources measurement and control systems, and the need to encourage farmers to use guided irrigation techniques.
Minister Raad pointed out during the meeting to the most prominent challenges and the most important aspects in which cooperation with the organization and the priorities of the Ministry in rehabilitating and developing irrigation facilities and projects to achieve effective management standards and rationalize water consumption and control it according to the priorities that ensure the return of the displaced to their lands, re-cultivation and moving the production wheel, indicating that the areas that The ministry was able to rehabilitate it, and by 2021 it reached more than 220 thousand hectares.
In turn, Al-Waer drew attention to the importance of cooperation with the Ministry in providing services that contribute to supporting farmers, building capacity of workers and training technical cadres, pointing to areas of joint work and the organization's interest in supporting projects with a sustainable social and economic dimension and developing the water system in Syria.
