The 9-euro ticket is intended to advertise public transport.

Where the ticket should be, what happens with monthly tickets and where the biggest problems are.

An overview.

Munich – From June 1st, all people in Germany should be able to travel cheaply by public transport.

From then on, the federal government wants to launch the 9-euro ticket.

As part of a relief package due to rising prices, Germans should be able to travel by bus and train for three months for 9 euros per month.

Below we have summarized the most important questions and answers about the 9-euro ticket for you.

9 euro ticket: area of validity and period

When is the 9 euro ticket valid?

The 9-euro ticket should be available from June 1st to August 31st, 2022.

The respective monthly ticket is then always valid for one calendar month.

The purchase date is therefore not relevant in this case.

Because it is offered during the summer months, it also applies during some school holidays, such as the Pentecost holidays and the summer holidays in most federal states.

Where is the 9 euro ticket valid?

According to current plans, the saver ticket should be valid throughout Germany.

But watch out: It only applies to local and regional transport.

Ferries, such as in Hamburg, are also covered by the ticket.

However, it will not be usable in long-distance traffic, i.e. for ICEs, ICs and ECs.

Relief package: How to buy the 9-euro ticket

How do I get the 9 euro ticket?

The federal government is currently planning an online platform on which tickets can be purchased digitally.

But some regional transport companies such as MVV have already announced that tickets will be available for purchase in the company's corresponding apps.

If you prefer to have it in paper form, you can probably also buy it at the customer center or from a vending machine.

What if I already have a ticket subscription?

Of course, subscription customers should also benefit from the 9-euro ticket.

According to the Association of German Transport Companies (VDV), subscribers to a monthly or annual ticket are automatically credited or refunded the difference to the 9 euros.

The same should apply to school and student tickets.

The discount should also be applied here.

Relief package 2022: 9-euro ticket financing not yet finally clarified

What other problems could arise with the 9-euro ticket?

Experts are concerned that the 9-euro ticket could result in a significantly larger number of passengers and that popular trains could be extremely crowded.

The chairman of the EVG railway union, Klaus Hommel, is concerned that the 9-euro ticket could lead to chaos.

"I expect overcrowded trains to be cleared and stations closed due to congestion," he said at a board meeting.

Financing is also still a major point of contention between the federal and state governments.

Because the states that are responsible for regional transport want more financial support than the federal government wants to promise them.

According to the VDV, the federal and state governments urgently need to clarify the financing issues.

“One shouldn’t forget that not only in other sectors, but of course also in public transport, energy and personnel costs are currently increasing significantly.

In this respect, it is not enough to simply compensate for the loss of income caused by the 9-euro ticket," said Wolff.

For this reason, the federal government's regionalization funds for financing local transport would have to be increased by an additional 1.5 billion euros this year.

However, the federal government rejects this with reference to relief in energy prices elsewhere.
