Border collie or Australian shepherd: which one to choose?

Sheepdogs of different origins

The Border Collie and the Australian Shepherd are both herding dogs, they belong to

group 1

 : Sheepdogs and Cattle Dogs.

They are excellent working dogs known for their herding skills.

Endowed with a great capacity for adaptation, they are also used as a hunting dog or even as an assistance dog.

Although belonging to the same group, the Border Collie and the Australian Shepherd both have different origins.

The Border Collie is a dog originating from Scotland.

And contrary to what its name implies, the Australian Shepherd is not native to Australia, but to the Basque Country.

The Australian Shepherd was recognized as a breed by the American Kennel Club in 1991 while the Border Collie was recognized in 1995.

Physics: how to tell them apart?

The Border Collie and the Australian Shepherd are medium sized dogs.

But the Australian Shepherd is generally heavier and more robust than the Border Collie, which has finer features.

However, their general physiology remains similar: a well-marked stop, almond-shaped eyes, a square head and a naturally hanging tail.

We can nevertheless notice a difference in the coat.

The Australian Shepherd has a straight and slightly wavy coat while the Border Collie can have a long, semi-long, short and much denser coat.
