The huge excavation pit has been excavated, the foundation stone laid: now the construction work for the new triple gymnasium with the extension of the Anne Frank Gymnasium begins.

A 36 million euro project.

Erding - Symbolic act for a major construction project: On Thursday, the district celebrated the laying of the foundation stone for the new triple gymnasium at the Anne-Frank-Gymnasium (AFG).

In the huge excavation pit at the corner of Munich and Parkstrasse, it became apparent how huge the project is, which will last for several years.

Total costs: around 36 million euros.

Even if the large-scale project will demand a lot from the school family in particular - and it already has, as AFG director Regine Hofmann noted - it is forward-looking.

This was emphasized by District Administrator Martin Bayerstorfer.

He hopes that the 2024 Abitur exams can be written in the new gym.

In three construction phases, not only a triple gymnasium with changing rooms will be built, but also an extension with a canteen, classrooms and new rooms for the district library.

This is followed by conversions in the existing building.

After long deliberations, the district council voted in favor of demolition and new construction instead of renovation, and the first gymnasium was demolished during the past summer holidays.

In their place - and on the former hard court, a new gym is being built - with an all-weather sports field on the roof.

This unusual solution, which is unique in the district to date, is due to the limited space available.

But it is not a risk, as architect Wendelin Burkhardt emphasized.

He is familiar with school buildings and has already planned the Korbinian-Aigner high school and the agricultural school in Erding.

Burkhardt emphasized that sports activities will continue during the construction work and that the next demolition will only take place when the first section is finished.

So far, 11,000 cubic meters of earth have been moved, 1,200 cubic meters of concrete and 75 tons of steel have been used – primarily for the bored pile walls.

After all, we are dealing here with the “notorious” Almboden, which, according to Burkhardt, is completely unsuitable as building ground.

Bayerstorfer explained that with the sports field on the roof of the hall, the district was “sending a clear signal for the economical use of space and for the implementation of newly conceived options for designing public space”.

Deputy Mayor Petra Bauernfeind also liked the idea of making a virtue out of necessity.

The sports field on the roof can also be used in the afternoons by the open all-day care and is surrounded by four meter high soundproof glazing to ensure the best possible noise protection for the neighborhood, says Bayerstorfer.

According to him, the construction to the passive house standard will have external walls with 26 centimeters of thermal insulation and triple-glazed windows.

The sports hall will be equipped with cooling.

The existing groundwater is used for this purpose.

According to the architect, 370 cubic meters of wood are used for the roof construction, plus the facade made of larch wood.

"The huge construction site has to be coped with," said headmistress Hofmann and reminded of the elimination of the playground.

She also had to look for rooms for physical education classes – with success.

She thanked the neighboring Realschulen and the city, who are helping out with hall capacities.

The fact that the number of registrations for the AFG suddenly dropped can possibly also be explained by the large construction site.

At the AFG, it's not only because of the construction of the gymnasium that things continue to be particularly sporty.

From the new school year there will be a football class and golf as an elective, Hofmann announced.

That is why the sheet copper box that was laid in the foundation stone contains not only the preamble to the house rules, the AFG annual report 2020/21, coins, daily newspapers and Anne Frank's diary, but also a sneaker.
