Germany is still dependent on Russian gas.

But a possible embargo would be manageable as early as winter, says Economics Minister Habeck – under certain conditions.

Economics Minister Robert Habeck (Greens) believes that Germany could cope with a boycott of Russian gas supplies as early as this winter.

However, he also states three conditions for this: "If we have full storage facilities at the turn of the year, if two of the four floating LNG tankers we have rented are already connected to the grid and if we save significantly on energy, we can, in the event of a break in Russian gas supplies get through the winter to some extent," he told

Wirtschaftswoche

, according to a pre-announcement on Wednesday evening.

Habeck: "Less consumption is the be-all and end-all when it comes to gas"

Against the background of the Ukraine war, Germany had already further reduced its dependence on Russian gas supplies in recent weeks.

So far, however, the government has only promised independence from Russian gas “by mid-2024”.

In order for things to get there faster, everyone involved would have to make a contribution, Habeck told

Wirtschaftswoche

.

"Less consumption is the be-all and end-all when it comes to gas." If industry and private individuals save ten percent of consumption, "then these are the decisive percentages in order not to get into an emergency," the minister continued.

"Everyone should take part."

Ukraine war: Habeck warns of even higher gas prices

According to Habeck, two of the four liquid gas ships ordered for Germany already replace almost a quarter of Russian natural gas imports.

Despite the progress, Habeck also warned in the interview about the economic risks of stopping Russian gas supplies.

"Even under the conditions mentioned, the gas prices would certainly be very high and the storage tanks would be empty at the end of the winter."

At the beginning of the Ukraine war, Germany got about 55 percent of its gas supplies from Russia.

According to the latest information from the Ministry of Economics, dependency has since been reduced to around 35 percent.

According to this, a gradual reduction to ten percent of gas consumption is possible by summer 2024.
