Iranian naval forces thwarted the hijacking of an Iranian merchant ship by pirates in the Gulf of Aden.
Iranian media reported today that the 80th naval patrol of the Iranian army clashed with pirates at dawn today, after receiving a message that unknown pirates had launched an attack on the ship.
She explained that after the accompanying marine protection team arrived in the area and exchanged fire, the pirates fled, while the Iranian merchant ship continued on its path to its specified destination.
Following the spread of piracy, Iranian warships have been constantly patrolling and escorting the merchant fleet of Iran and other countries in the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean since 2008.
