For the parties in North Rhine-Westphalia, the countdown to the state elections on May 15, 2022 is on. The poll results indicate a neck-and-neck race.
Düsseldorf – In addition to Saarland, Schleswig-Holstein and Lower Saxony, the state parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia will also be re-elected this year in Germany's most populous state, North Rhine-Westphalia.
On May 15, the time has come: Around 13.2 million citizens entitled to vote are called upon to cast their two votes.
Of course, this can also be done earlier and conveniently by postal vote from home or with a ballot paper at the ballot box.
Political party | CDU | SPD | FDP | Green | AfD |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Poll Results 2022 | 27 percent | 29 percent | 12 percent | 14 percent | 8 percent |
State election 2017 | 33 percent | 31.2 percent | 12.6 percent | 6.4 percent | 7.4 percent |

In North Rhine-Westphalia, the state parliament in Düsseldorf is re-elected every five years.
Since 2012, the race for the strongest party between the CDU and the SPD has become increasingly tight.
In the election ten years ago, the SPD was able to skim 39.1 percent (99 seats) of the votes, the CDU, on the other hand, only 26.3 percent (67 seats).
The Greens got 11.3 percent (29 seats), FDP 8.6 percent (22 seats) and the Pirate Party 7.8 percent (20 seats).
In 2017, the CDU then secured the most votes (33 percent, 72 seats).
The SPD followed closely behind with 31.2 percent (69 seats).
The two major parties were followed by the FDP (12.6 percent, 28 seats), AfD (7.4 percent, 16 seats) and the Greens (6.4 percent, 14 seats).
A yellow-black coalition has thus steered the fortunes of the federal state for the past five years.
State elections in NRW 2022: polls may show a tight outcome
After Armin Laschet gave up his office as Prime Minister to Hendrik Wüst early in autumn 2021, the 46-year-old Wüst is now going into the election campaign as a top candidate.
His worst competitor: Thomas Kutschaty from the SPD.
The latest poll numbers show that things could get very close between these two candidates and their parties.
All top candidates for the state elections in NRW are at a glance.
The INSA
Institute
published the results (as of April 17, 2022).
Accordingly, the SPD would be the strongest party with around 31 percentage points, only two percent behind the CDU.
According to the survey, the Greens could more than double their 2017 result and would reach around 14 percent (2017: 6.4 percent).
The FDP would have 10 percent of the votes, the AfD seven percent and the Left would have about four percent.

So the SPD and CDU are still very close together.
The Greens could make a real leap if the polls stay the same.
According to the current status, the party around top candidate Mona Neubaur would be the third strongest force in the North Rhine-Westphalian state parliament.
