In the final spurt to the state elections in North Rhine-Westphalia, the parties step on the gas again.
Prime Minister Wüst relies on "tailwind from the north".
SPD challenger Kuchaty also wants to win the election.
Altenberge/Cologne - Two days before the state elections in North Rhine-Westphalia, the parties again campaigned for votes on Friday with many prominent politicians.
At his official closing event in Altenberge in Münsterland, Prime Minister Hendrik Wüst (CDU) underlined the importance of stable political conditions in order to “be able to do what is important”.
That is the election campaign slogan of the North Rhine-Westphalia CDU, which has been in a close race with the SPD in the polls for weeks - with a slight lead for the Christian Democrats.
The election in the most populous federal state with around 13 million eligible voters is also considered an important test of mood in federal politics.
The head of government in North Rhine-Westphalia received support on Friday from Schleswig-Holstein's Prime Minister Daniel Günther (CDU), who won the state elections there last Sunday by a wide margin.
“In the end, we gained five percentage points in Schleswig-Holstein compared to the surveys.
And I don't see any reason why that shouldn't happen in NRW, too," said Günther, who won more than 43 percent of the votes.
"I hope that you are still using the last few hours to campaign properly." In his own words, Wüst felt "tailwind from the north".
"Sold below value"
At the closing rally of the SPD in Cologne, federal party leader Lars Klingbeil criticized that the proud federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia had been "sold below value" during the years under the black and yellow state government.
NRW needs a social-democratic state government that can handle the transformation of the industrial state, knows the value of work, "that gets involved and that works with Berlin".
SPD General Secretary Kevin Kühnert called for voting for the SPD instead of “1.5 percent parties”.

The Social Democratic top candidate Thomas Kutschaty promised to abolish daycare fees and to make school a "top priority".
"Where the problems are greatest, the social tensions are the hardest and the need for support is greatest, that's where we will build the most beautiful school buildings," promised the SPD head of state.
"That's where most of the teachers and social workers come from." The SPD had fought hard in the past six weeks.
She rang the doorbell and was out and about in marketplaces.
"We are eager to win the election."

At the final rally of the Greens in Cologne, Federal Economics Minister Robert Habeck said about top candidate Mona Neubaur: "It just doesn't feel like highlight time.
But if Mona is elected to a government next Sunday, then I would say that will be quite a highlight.” dpa
