According to a survey conducted shortly before the elections in North Rhine-Westphalia, the CDU is ahead of the SPD.

According to the survey, a red-green government is still possible.

Düsseldorf - Immediately before the state elections in North Rhine-Westphalia, the CDU is still slightly ahead of the SPD, according to the ZDF "Politbarometer".

According to the survey, Prime Minister Hendrik Wüst's CDU would get 32 percent - two points more than in the previous week.

The SPD was able to increase by one point to 29 percent.

Election in North Rhine-Westphalia: black-green and red-green are possible

In the survey by the Wahlen research group published on Thursday evening, the Greens fell by one point to 17 percent and would therefore be the third strongest force - and the kingmakers.

Because according to the survey, there would be a majority both for a coalition of CDU and Greens and very narrowly for a red-green government.

This scenario is also confirmed by other polls for the NRW election.

The FDP came to 6 percent in the survey, the AfD to an unchanged 7 percent.

In Schleswig-Holstein last week, the AfD was voted out of a state parliament for the first time.

The Left would have to worry about returning to the state parliament with an unchanged 3 percent.

However, a third of the 2254 respondents were still undecided as to whether and who they would vote for.

When asked about the preferred head of government, Wüst was 40 percent ahead of SPD challenger Thomas Kutschaty with 35 percent.

In general, election polls are subject to uncertainties.

Among other things, declining party ties and increasingly short-term voting decisions make it difficult for the opinion research institutes to weight the data collected.

In principle, surveys only reflect the opinion at the time of the survey and are not a forecast of the outcome of the election.

Election in North Rhine-Westphalia: TV duel between top candidates was quiet

In the eagerly awaited NRW television duel between the top candidates Hendrik Wüst and Thomas Kutschaty, the big argument didn't materialize.

The two lawyers only occasionally took a tougher approach to the program broadcast live by Westdeutscher Rundfunk from Solingen - for example on the topics of internal security, education and housing.

As far as the current state of the police in North Rhine-Westphalia is concerned, Kutschaty clearly criticized the strategy of the state government: for a functioning police work, not only more police officers are needed on the street, but also officials who solve the crimes.

"The criminal police is at the limit," said Kuchaty.

"It's no wonder then that we're at the bottom of the clear-up rates for the non-city states." Acting Prime Minister Wüst countered that his state government had already begun to hire more police officers.
