An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.5 shook Lima and its surroundings on Thursday May 13, causing panic among the inhabitants, reported the National Seismological Center of Peru which has not reported any damage or victims for the time being.

The tremor was recorded at 4:55 p.m. local time (21:55 GMT).
The epicenter was located 30 km west of Chilca, a coastal town located 70 km south of Lima, at a depth of 49 km, said the Seismological Center.

An earthquake of magnitude 5.5 occurred 30 km west of Chilca (...) In Lima, the population felt it strongly.
No damage has been reported at this time.
Surveillance continues in vulnerable areas
,” Civil Protection said on Twitter.
In several neighborhoods of the Peruvian capital, people took to the streets as a precaution, including parliamentarians who were attending a session in parliament, according to images broadcast by local television channels.
Peru is located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, a zone of significant seismic activity along the west coast of the American continent.
On January 7, a magnitude 5.6 earthquake hit Lima and nearby towns, injuring nine people and damaging several homes.
