Pioneer park: Cologne is getting a new park - and that already in summer

Parkstadt Süd in Cologne will not be finished until 2037 at the earliest.
But soon a section of the major project will open its doors: the Pioneer Park.
Cologne – Construction has been going on since June 2021: The Pioneer Park is being built in the south of Cologne.
Between the wholesale market, the Vorgebirgsstraße and the railway embankment.
The park is around 40,000 square meters in size and, in addition to lots of greenery, should also offer sports facilities, as reported by the IPPEN.MEDIA portal 24RHEIN.
In the course of the Parkstadt Süd project, the inner green belt is being completed as far as the Rhine.
Citizens can also make suggestions for the green belt in Parkstadt Süd.
The city says the pioneer park is intended to provide a first “foretaste” of what this could look like in the future.
It is deliberately only planned for temporary use.
But what does that mean exactly?

"Areas of the former wholesale market and former DB areas were already transferred to the Parks Department for use in anticipation of the realization of Parkstadt Süd," says a city spokeswoman for 24RHEIN.
While the start of construction for the living and working areas is not yet foreseeable, the office has already been able to get down to business here.
Incidentally, the first apartments are being built very close to the pioneer park – more than 200 residential units are being built on Sechtemer Strasse.
The site itself will not be fundamentally redesigned, but existing gravel and green areas will be used.
The planned sports areas are to be integrated into the existing overall picture.
The green areas are only selectively expanded.
Among other things, 43 new trees will be planted, including 25 fruit trees.
The people of Cologne should be able to use the park as early as summer 2022.

Parkstadt Süd Cologne: Pioneer park is only an interim solution
The interim use will run for "about two to eight years", says the city spokeswoman for 24RHEIN.
Until the final planning draft of the inner green belt is finalized.
Then the park will be restored.
"All materials and plants used find their place on site or on other green spaces and are largely reused," says the website of Parkstadt Süd.
In addition, pollutants will be removed from the gravel areas so that a new park landscape can develop.
And then?
"What exactly gets there depends on public participation and the results," says the city spokeswoman.
