This mega-project would be an enormous gain for Garmisch-Partenkirchen and the entire region: The non-profit Long-leif GaPa GmbH would like to set up a modern campus for research, care and vocational training in the district town - for 130 to 150 million euros.

The whole thing is now taking on very concrete forms.

The groundbreaking should be in 2024.

Garmisch-Partenkirchen – The ambitious project still only exists on paper.

But this year the course is to be set for a campus building in Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

The master plan is in place - and negotiations with potential partners and investors are well advanced.

The schedule is extremely ambitious, especially as a complicated building permit process is pending: the groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled to take place as early as 2024 – and the complex will be commissioned in 2026.

Project with TU Munich

As reported, the non-profit Longleif GaPa GmbH is in the process of writing a piece of Bavarian economic history.

The municipal company in the market town, which manages and uses foundation assets worth millions, is planning a research, education and care center together with the Technical University of Munich on its own almost 30,000 square meter site near the train station.

Longleif Managing Director Viktor Wohlmannstetter, who presented the current status in a press conference, speaks of a "lighthouse project" that is probably unique in Germany.

"We are convinced that the campus project is a unique opportunity for Garmisch-Partenkirchen and the entire region." This not only ensures that the older generation is cared for.

The desired university location also opens up new perspectives for young people and the economy.

It's about a lot of jobs (290 in total) and a third mainstay alongside the established pillars of tourism and health.

A total of around 650 people will live, learn or work at the facility.

The campus aims to interlink research, teaching and practice.

A key cornerstone: a healthcare robotics center headed by Professor Sami Haddadin.

The scientist is a leading figure in the field of geriatronics, in which, among other things, assistance systems for elderly care are tinkered with.

Teachers and around 200 students will research the basics and develop robots under the Alpspitze.

They can test the technology on the spot in a nursing home, in which Caritas has expressed an interest as a potential operator.

In addition, a training center for health professions and several buildings for assisted living are to be built on the site with lots of greenery and university flair.

Costs of 130 to 150 million euros

Of course, none of this will come cheap: an initial cost estimate is between 130 and 150 million euros – a huge sum.

"We probably need financing partners," reports Wohlmannstetter.

One option would be a mutual fund.

Refinancing is to be primarily via rental income.

For example, a long-term lease agreement is planned with the Technical University.

Wohlmannstetter wants to take the population with him - and promotes the campus vision.

After the G7 summit, larger information events will start, at which a 3D visualization will also be shown.

Aspects that may contain explosive material should also be addressed.

These include the architecture of the up to five-storey functional building and the additional living space required.
