A "Center for Integrated Infection Prevention" is to be set up in Weihenstephan.

The state's budget committee gave the go-ahead for planning the 43 million euro project.

Freising

– The TUM campus in Weihenstephan is getting bigger: The “Center for Integrated Infection Prevention” (ZIP) is being built there, in which the Technical University will use its expertise to develop innovative strategies for the prevention, control and prevention of the spread of resistant pathogens in humans and livestock united.

As early as July 2020, the Joint Science Conference decided that the federal and state governments would support the project with around 40 million euros.

The planning of the construction project was approved by the budget committee of the Bavarian state parliament on Thursday.

According to the latest information, the costs amount to around 43 million euros.

The federal government participates with 50 percent.

Fear of relapsing into pre-antiobitic times

"The strong increase in resistant bacteria and the associated massive increase in the risk of infections in humans and animals that cannot be treated with antibiotics is one of the greatest scientific, medical and social challenges of our time in the long term," says TUM.

"Without innovations, there is a risk of a relapse to the pre-antibiotic era, in which simple injuries could develop into deadly threats," says founding director Dietmar Zehn, Professor of Animal Physiology and Immunology.

Therefore, in the future, all competences that were previously spread over three locations will be combined in one center.

(By the way: everything from the region is now also available in our regular Freising newsletter.)

Its research is to be divided into three pillars: modulation and dynamics of the microbiome, strengthening local immunity at microbially populated interfaces and innovative technologies.

Because resistant bacteria are considered both in humans and in livestock, "the ZIP sets a globally unique focus at the interfaces of medicine, life sciences, microbiology, bioanalytics and computer science," says the TUM.

The Institute aims to put new prevention strategies into practice as quickly as possible.

This should largely avoid the use of antibiotics in animal husbandry, better control existing infections and prevent transmission routes between animals and humans.

Unique in Germany

"Research in this area is essential for society," said Freising's constituency deputy and Minister of State Florian Herrmann after the budget committee's decision on Thursday.

The center is unique in Germany and internationally at the highest level.

"This once again strengthens the Weihenstephan location."

After approval by the budget committee of the state parliament, the planning for the ZIP is now being continued in depth.

However, it is not being built yet.

"This requires further approval by the budget committee at a later date," says Herrmann.
