The Russian government recommended its citizens to refrain from traveling to Britain, accusing London of obstructing visa issuance procedures for Russian nationals.
The Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement today, reported by Russia Today, that it had recently received multiple complaints from Russian citizens who say that obtaining a visa to enter the United Kingdom has already become impossible or very difficult for them, noting that the talk is not only about tourists, but also about citizens. Russians working in Britain or wishing to visit their relatives or reunite their families.
The statement pointed out that the Russian Foreign Ministry asked the British Embassy in Moscow for clarifications on this issue, but London justified its behavior by saying:The UK in issuing visas is currently giving priority to processing Ukrainian refugee applications, which significantly hinders the process of processing the applications of Russian citizens. The sanctions imposed by the United Kingdom on Russia prevent the payment of these fees through a British government website using (Visa) and (MasterCard) cards issued by Russian banks, and the statement stressed that this behavior against ordinary Russian citizens is unacceptable and contradicts all agreements on consular issues previously concluded between The two countries indicated that “the behavior of British officials can only be described as a politicized violation of the rights of Russian citizens. Therefore, given the extremely unfriendly approach that Britain is taking against our country, and in order to avoid financial losses and other potential problems, we advise Russian citizens to refrain as much as possible.”The possibility of traveling to Britain and attempts to obtain a British visa.”
The ministry pledged that Russia would follow a similar approach against the British unless the situation was resolved.
